Overview

SAP ERP Human Capital Management (SAP ERP HCM) is the on-premise HR suite within SAP Business Suite 7 / ECC — core HR, payroll, time management, talent and employee self-services — and the HR heart of many long-running SAP ERP systems.

Aligned to Business Suite 7, its mainstream maintenance runs until 31 December 2027, with optional extended maintenance to 31 December 2030; after that only customer-specific maintenance remains.

SAP offers two forward paths: SAP HCM for S/4HANA (H4S4), which continues the on-premise code line with maintenance to 2040, and SAP SuccessFactors, the strategic cloud HCM suite. Payroll and time are the usual reasons to keep an on-premise footing via H4S4.

HR and HR-IT leaders should decide their target — H4S4, SuccessFactors, or a hybrid — well before the 2027 deadline, since payroll continuity is business-critical and migrations are lengthy.
