SAP S/4HANA 2025

Overview

SAP S/4HANA 2025 is the newest on-premise release of SAP's flagship HANA-based ERP, delivered under the biennial release strategy and carrying the longest maintenance commitment in the on-premise line. It represents the current state of the art for organisations standardising on S/4HANA, consolidating the functional and technical innovation of the preceding releases into a long-life landing version intended to be a stable destination rather than a stepping stone.

It became generally available on 8 October 2025. SAP mainstream maintenance runs until 31 December 2032 — the date from which SAP ceases routine corrections, security notes and legal/regulatory updates for the release. Crucially, SAP offers no extended-maintenance phase for this release, so the mainstream date is a hard cut-off rather than the start of a paid extension — there is no buying of extra time at the version level. That horizon looks comfortable, but because conversions and re-implementations commonly span multiple years, early roadmap placement still pays off.

As the latest release, 2025 is itself the migration target: the forward path is simply the next biennial release in due course, reached through a routine in-place upgrade. Customers converting from ECC, and those upgrading from older annual S/4HANA releases, should give serious weight to landing directly on 2025 because doing so maximises the remaining support runway and minimises how soon the next mandatory upgrade comes around.

Anyone planning a new S/4HANA conversion, a fresh greenfield implementation, or an upgrade away from an annual release should evaluate 2025 as the option that buys the most support life — a key input for CIOs, enterprise architects and programme leads sequencing multi-year roadmaps and trying to avoid back-to-back upgrade projects.
