SAP S/4HANA 2023 is the first on-premise release under SAP's biennial release strategy, designed explicitly as a long-life landing release with a multi-year maintenance commitment. It is a primary destination for customers completing ECC-to-S/4HANA conversions in the mid-2020s, and a recommended target for those upgrading off the annual line.
It became generally available on 11 October 2023. SAP mainstream maintenance runs until 31 December 2030 — after which SAP no longer ships corrections, legal changes or new support package stacks for this version. Crucially, SAP offers no extended-maintenance phase for this release, so the mainstream date is a hard cut-off rather than the start of a paid extension — there is no buying of extra time at the version level. That horizon looks comfortable, but because conversions and re-implementations commonly span multiple years, early roadmap placement still pays off.
Because it is current and long-supported, the migration question for 2023 is forward-looking rather than urgent: the successor is simply the next biennial release, and customers can schedule that upgrade within a generous maintenance window on their own terms instead of under deadline pressure.
2023 is a strong choice for organisations finishing brownfield conversions or greenfield builds now. Programme owners and enterprise architects selecting a target release will find it a stable, well-supported option with a long horizon, which makes it easier to justify the conversion investment and to avoid an early repeat upgrade.
