SAP Process Orchestration (PO) is the current on-premise generation of SAP's classic integration middleware, combining Process Integration, Business Process Management and Business Rules Management on a single Java stack running on SAP NetWeaver 7.5. It remains in active production use for a large number of SAP and B2B/EDI interfaces that form the connective tissue between SAP and the rest of the enterprise.
It first shipped around 2012. SAP mainstream maintenance runs until 31 December 2027 — beyond which no further support packages, legal updates or standard fixes are produced by SAP for this version. For customers who opt in, a paid extended-maintenance phase then carries support to 31 December 2030, after which only customer-specific maintenance remains available. That leaves a workable but finite window; given that SAP transformations routinely run multi-year, scoping and budgeting should be underway rather than deferred.
The strategic successor is SAP Integration Suite on SAP BTP, SAP's cloud-native integration platform-as-a-service, toward which SAP is steering all integration workloads. Because PO and the underlying NetWeaver 7.5 stack share SAP Business Suite 7 maintenance dates, PO carries a genuine countdown — and Integration Suite, with its prebuilt content and migration tooling, is designed to absorb the interfaces currently running on it.
Integration architects and middleware owners should treat PO's maintenance dates as the trigger to plan their Integration Suite adoption now: inventory every interface, assess re-implementation effort, and sequence the migration rather than waiting for the platform to fall out of support. Interface migrations are detailed, test-heavy work, so the realistic lead time argues for starting early.
