SAP Master Data Governance (MDG) 9.2 is the classic add-on edition of SAP's master-data governance solution, providing governed creation, change, approval and distribution of master data — material, business partner, supplier, customer and finance objects — on the Business Suite / NetWeaver stack. For organisations that treat master-data quality as a control issue, it is a central piece of governance tooling.
It became generally available on 16 November 2018. SAP mainstream maintenance runs until 31 December 2027 — beyond which no further support packages, legal updates or standard fixes are produced by SAP for this version. For customers who opt in, a paid extended-maintenance phase then carries support to 31 December 2030, after which only customer-specific maintenance remains available. That leaves a workable but finite window; given that SAP transformations routinely run multi-year, scoping and budgeting should be underway rather than deferred.
MDG is now also delivered embedded within SAP S/4HANA, and a cloud edition exists; customers running the classic 9.2 add-on typically fold their governance processes into S/4HANA as part of their ERP modernisation rather than maintaining a standalone instance indefinitely. The move is a re-platforming of governance models and workflows rather than a simple version upgrade.
Master-data and data-governance teams running classic MDG should align its Business Suite 7-aligned dates with their S/4HANA roadmap, planning to land governance natively in S/4HANA. Because master data feeds every downstream process, continuity of governance during the transition is important, which again favours early, well-sequenced planning.
