SAP R/2 was SAP's mainframe-based, two-tier ERP of the 1980s — the commercial breakthrough that established SAP across European enterprises and introduced integrated, real-time business processing on the mainframe.
It first shipped around 1979. As a continuously delivered cloud service it follows a rolling-release model: SAP updates it on a regular cadence and publishes no single end-of-maintenance date, so there is no countdown clock for the line as a whole. Individual data-center releases may carry their own short windows, but customers are kept current automatically rather than facing a version cliff.
R/2 was superseded by the client-server R/3 in the 1990s, which in turn became SAP ERP/ECC. It is part of the lineage rather than a current migration source.
Primarily of interest for lineage and context, R/2 helps readers trace how SAP's architecture evolved from mainframe to client-server to today's HANA-based ERP.
