SAP S/4HANA 2021 is an on-premise annual release of SAP's HANA-based ERP, adding incremental functional scope and technical refinement over the 2020 release and serving as a widely deployed mid-cycle landing point for customers who upgraded steadily through the annual line.
It became generally available on 13 October 2021. SAP mainstream maintenance runs until 31 December 2026 — beyond which no further support packages, legal updates or standard fixes are produced by SAP for this version. Crucially, SAP offers no extended-maintenance phase for this release, so the mainstream date is a hard cut-off rather than the start of a paid extension — there is no buying of extra time at the version level. With the deadline close, organisations still on this release have little slack left and should already be executing — not just planning — their move.
As with the other annual releases, the route forward is an in-place upgrade to a current biennial release — 2023 or 2025 — which carries a substantially longer maintenance window. Moving onto the biennial line is the strategic step, because those releases are engineered as long-life destinations rather than yearly waypoints.
IT and application teams on 2021 should schedule an upgrade well ahead of its hard mainstream cut-off, since there is no paid extension available. Aligning the move with a jump onto the biennial release line lets a single upgrade project deliver both currency and a longer runway, which is an easier business case than repeated annual upgrades.
