SAP ERP Central Component (ECC) 6.0 at enhancement packages 6, 7 and 8 is the most current feature level of SAP Business Suite 7 and the configuration that the large majority of long-standing SAP ERP customers run in production today. These levels added SAP HANA readiness, newer SAP Fiori-based user-experience options and incremental functional scope across finance, logistics and HR, while preserving the familiar ECC architecture and the investments customers made in it. That blend of modern-enough capability and architectural continuity is precisely why EHP6–8 carries SAP's longest Business Suite 7 maintenance commitment.
It became generally available on 20 January 2016. SAP mainstream maintenance runs until 31 December 2027 — after which SAP no longer ships corrections, legal changes or new support package stacks for this version. For customers who opt in, a paid extended-maintenance phase then carries support to 31 December 2030, after which only customer-specific maintenance remains available. A separate transition milestone of 31 December 2033 — SAP ERP, private edition — transition option (select RISE) is also tracked, pending confirmation. That leaves a workable but finite window; given that SAP transformations routinely run multi-year, scoping and budgeting should be underway rather than deferred.
The successor is SAP S/4HANA. Customers most commonly convert in place (a brownfield system conversion that preserves configuration, history and custom code subject to remediation), take a selective data transition where they want to consolidate or clean up, or re-implement greenfield for a fresh process design. Reaching the latest enhancement-package and support-package level is the usual technical prerequisite, which makes EHP6–8 both the comfortable place to be today and the natural launch pad for the move — including the readiness checks, custom-code analysis and Fiori adoption that a conversion entails.
This timeline is relevant to essentially every classic SAP ERP shop. CIOs and transformation sponsors should use the available runway to plan a measured S/4HANA conversion rather than a compressed, high-risk one, while Basis and development teams handle simplification-item remediation and custom-code adjustment. Licensing and compliance owners should pay particular attention to the compatibility-pack rules, which dictate how long specific classic ECC functions may continue to run after the S/4HANA move.
